Instructions for Clients Appearing for Zoom Hearings
Attending a Zoom court hearing requires the same level of professionalism and preparation as appearing in person. From dressing appropriately to ensuring your technology is ready, following these guidelines will help you present yourself effectively and avoid any disruptions. In this post, we'll cover the key steps to take for a smooth and respectful virtual court appearance.
Treat the Zoom Hearing as a Formal Court Appearance
You are expected to conduct yourself as you would in a physical courtroom. This includes dressing appropriately and behaving respectfully.
Be on Time
Join the Zoom hearing at least 15 minutes early to ensure you can troubleshoot any technical issues before the session begins.
Location Matters
Choose a quiet, private space where you will not be interrupted. Ensure your background is free of distractions and clutter.
Technology Readiness
Test your internet connection, microphone, and camera before the hearing. Make sure your device is fully charged or plugged in during the hearing.
Camera and Microphone
If the Court asks you to turn your camera on, keep your camera on throughout the hearing. If you are represented by counsel, most Judges and Commissioners do not require the party’s cameras to be on, but some prefer it, so be prepared for either scenario. Your microphone should remain muted unless you are asked to speak (very rare if you have a lawyer).
No Eating or Drinking
You should not eat during the hearing, and the only beverage permitted is water. This reflects the level of formality expected during a court appearance.
Dress Appropriately
Dress as if you are attending court in person. Business casual or formal attire is appropriate.
Body Language and Engagement
Sit up straight and avoid fidgeting. Keep eye contact by looking at the camera when you are speaking. Do not react emotionally or make faces. It is important to remain composed. Do not engage in other activities, such as checking your phone or browsing the internet.
Minimize Distractions
Ensure that your phone is silenced and that you are not multitasking. Avoid having children, pets, or other individuals in the background.
Professionalism
Address the judge respectfully by saying "Your Honor" and follow any courtroom decorum, just as you would in person.
